Video Game Design, Augmented Reality, Quadcopters, and Rock Climbing: Ages 13-16
Pokemon Go was the first time most people saw augmented reality. Driving/Flying video games like Rocket League are very popular but we could not figure out how to include the Robots?!
We start with a quadcopter equipped with a video camera and transmitter. We capture that live video and feed it into the Unity 3D game engine. While a camper remotely flies a quadcopter around in the classroom or down the hallway another program like Vuforia inserts virtual objects into the video stream. Campers program Unity and Vuforia to recognize certain items in the real world and replace them with virtual objects. Imagine a hallway becomes a gauntlet with animated monsters jumping off the walls or a desk becomes a stone archway in a podrace on malastare.
This year we are teaming up with the Gamer Society. They bring stem and digital arts to underserved communities. We are helping with the hardware and curriculum development so the Gamer Society can take this into afterschool programs around the state and maybe around the country.
In addition to the robotics activities, campers are trained in rock climbing safety and knot tying, before taking two, afternoon field trips to Planet Rock on Tuesday and Thursday. On these days, the camp is extended until 5:00 pm. As with all Rocks and Robots programs, we go outside several times a day for inclusive group games and free play.
